Competent Crew practical course

The course

Your route to adventure starts here! Competent Crew courses are run over 5 days or 2 weekends (2 day + 3 day).  No sailing experience is necessary as our objective is to teach the basics so you become a competent member of the crew.  We all remember what it was like to join a boat for the first time, so we do our best to impart our knowledge and skills in the best way we can.  With only 3 students on our 8-berth boat you will have a cabin all to yourself, ensuring a comfortable environment for all crew members aboard for the duration of the course.
  • We supply all Competent Crew students with the RYA Logbook

The smile says it all!

  • Your own spacious cabin
  • Live on board with great food.
  • Just 3 students in an 8-berth boat.
  • An instructor whose sole aim is to impart their knowledge to you so you can enjoy sailing in safety and comfort.
  • A great time learning to sail.

What about the weather?

It is unusual for us to have to cancel a course due to bad weather but, should this happen, a full refund or rescheduling will be arranged.  We will do our best to ensure you have a great sailing and learning experience.

Learning to sail a triangular course and how to maneuver the vessel in marinas are all part of the experience on board.  No experience is necessary; after the course you will be competent to act as crew on a cruising yacht.

We endeavour to supply as much of what you need as possible. We supply pillows – but not pillow cases. We supply wet weather gear – but not footwear.

So here is a guide as to what you might bring:

  • A sleeping bag
  • A pillowcase
  • A personal torch
  • A towel
  • Any essential medication
  • Please ensure you have plenty of warm clothing bearing in mind that it is colder out on the water, and you may get wet
  • A pair of non-marking deck shoes or trainers
  • Non-slip/non-marking waterproof sailing boots. These can be bought in most chandlers for about £42 [optional] (available here)
  • Sailing gloves [optional] (available here)
  • Waterproof clothing (unless you have asked us to provide it)
  • Notebook, pen and pencil
  • Sunscreen, sunhat and sunglasses / warm hat, gloves
  • Passport if doing a Coastal Skipper course or a Channel Hop
  • Evidence of health insurance if doing a Coastal Skipper course or a Channel Hop
  • PASSPORT PHOTO for Day Skipper / Coastal Skipper candidates with name and date of birth on reverse

Pack your gear in a soft bag or holdall, i.e. not a hard suitcase, as stowage on board is limited.  We provide all safety equipment such as lifejackets and harnesses etc.
