With some new faces joining us at Fort William our yachts set out for open seas once again, this time navigating their way along the west coast of Scotland and its islands. Our first stop of this leg is Oban, home to some fantastic wildlife and a rather fine distillery!

Tacking their way along Loch Linnie, our crews head out toward the Sound of Mull, which lies in store as tomorrow’s adventure.

As our intrepid crews near the end of the third leg of the sail4macmillan.com Round Britain cruise, the ever-imposing Ben Nevis looms over the eight locks of Neptune’s Staircase at Banavie.

Designed and built by Thomas Telford between 1803 and 1822, Neptune’s Staircase is the longest staircase lock in Britain and a popular tourist attraction along the canal. It takes some time to descend, but it is time well spent in such a location as this!

Once the yachts arrive at their berths in Fort William, it is time for our crews to gather (socially distanced) in one of the local pubs for a well-earned meal and an opportunity to share their experiences of the week shared on board.

As some depart for home and others arrive, the yachts are cleaned and serviced ready to undertake the next leg of their voyage: the western islands of Scotland.

Life slows down on a canal voyage.

As the stunning scenery drifts by, the Sun has come out to show the highlands at their absolute best. As Monet, Galliver II and Florence Agnes II navigate the locks and bridges of the Caledonian canal, those on board have time to ponder, wander and relax, feasting their eyes on the most glorious countryside.

Today is the day our crews venture into one of the most famous (or infamous?) bodies of water in the world: Loch Ness. There are stories abound regarding Nessie, the Loch Ness monster, as well as numerous sightings of this legendary creature, but will we see any sign of her on our journey across the loch?

Rafting up for lunch on Loch Ness.

Loch Ness is huge, so our crews decided to raft up for a spot of lunch, as well as a bit of monster spotting, before continuing westward toward the marina at Fort Augustus and their overnight berths.

Leg 3 of the sail4macmillan Round Britain cruise begins with new crew members setting off from Inverness heading for the Caledonian canal.

After locking in to the canal itself, our three yachts will make their way through the highlands over the next few days, heading for Fort William. Our crews wil spend a lot of time admiring the stunning views from the canal itself as well as enjoying the open water of Loch Lochie, monster hunting on Loch Ness, and descending the famous Neptune’s Staircase.

The canal presents a unique set of challenges on this cruise, navigating a series of locks and bridges, and our crews enjoy travelling at a more relaxed pace, but how often do you get to look up at Ben Nevis from the deck of a Yacht?

As the second leg of the sail4macmillan Round Britain cruise draws to a close, our yachts and their crews approach their destination of Inverness, the northernmost city in Scotland and start of the famous Caledonian Canal.

Before their arrival, however, there was time to fit in one last sunset at sea as the crews approached their destination, providing yet another priceless memory of their experience at sea.

It’s not just about sailing!

One of the joys of cruising under sail is visiting a host of marinas and coastal towns and villages all around the coast, as well as sampling the local produce. Of course, you cannot pass through Arbroath without trying ‘smokies’, the smoked haddock famous around the world.

One of Arbroath's famous 'smokies'.

As our crews enjoyed a day’s rest in Arbroath, they tucked in to a feast of smokies on board, preparing themselves for their next sail the following day.

Enjoying a well-earned lunch aboard Monet.

As our yachts progress along the coast on the second leg of the Round Britain cruise, it became clear that they were not alone! As you can see in the video clip below, taken by Phil, Monet’s skipper, a school of dolphins accompanied our vessels on their journey north.

It is sights like this that make sailing such a joyous experience: you will never see sights like this any other way! Seeing dolphins in the wild is such an amazing spectacle, and becomes a memory to be treasured.

After a thrilling week on board, our crews completed the first leg of the 2021 sail4macmillan cruise on their arrival at Royal Quays marina, North Shields. With a busy week behind them, everyone celebrated a job well done and the friendships forged in their shared experience.

Some have now travelled home whilst others are continuing on the next leg to Inverness, eager to meet the new arrivals that will be sailing with them.

After a good night’s rest, our intrepid crews departed Whitby harbour on an overcast Friday morning, yes still clearly in high spirits as their adventure continues!

Not long after there emerged bit of sun and a bit of wind, so all three boats could continue their way along the beautiful north east coast – past the beaches of Redcar and the Tees estuary, making their way toward their overnight stop at Hartlepool.
